The bolts that weren’t there

When you pick your car up from a shop, you assume every fastener is where the factory put it. Usually it is. Here’s what happens when it isn’t — and how a proper inspection catches it.

Most repair work is invisible. You drop the car off, you pick it up, it runs — and you trust that everything under the hood and under the floor went back together the way the engineer intended. The overwhelming majority of the time, it did.

But “usually” isn’t a standard we’re comfortable with. That’s why we inspect a car before and after we work on it — and why we take a hard look whenever a vehicle comes in after work was done somewhere else.

A recent example: a European sedan came through our sister shop, Lang Racing Development, and a routine inspection turned up something that shouldn’t happen. A previous shop had reassembled the driveline without all of its bolts — missing transmission and oil-pan hardware — and without the correct seals. The car drove. It looked fine. But it was one hard mile from a leak, a vibration, or a failure that would cost far more than the bolts ever would.

How we work at Pinnacle

The point isn’t that other shops are careless — most are excellent. The point is that the only way to know your car was put back together correctly is to check. That’s what dealership-quality service actually means, and it’s what we do on every BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, and MINI that comes through our doors.

Curious about the car that prompted this? The performance and dyno work — including a 235,000-mile Audi 200 Quattro that came in for a Mustang dyno session — is handled by our sister shop, Lang Racing Development, two doors down at 22512 Aspan St.
