A customer came to us needing his car set up so he could drive it entirely by hand. He had already bought the kit — a universal hand control system, the kind advertised to fit a wide range of vehicles.
That word does a lot of work in the marketing. In practice, “universal” means the manufacturer supplies parts that can be adapted to many cars. It doesn’t mean those parts fit any particular car correctly. The kit gives you a starting point. Everything after that is fabrication, and how well it’s done is the difference between equipment that merely functions and a car that’s genuinely set up for the person driving it.
What a proper installation has to achieve
Before touching the car, it’s worth being clear about what “done properly” means here. Every one of these matters, and most of them are where a quick installation goes wrong.
- The driver’s seat still has to adjust. Bolting the control assembly to the floor is the fast way, and it leaves the seat fixed in one position permanently.
- The foot pedals have to keep working. Other people drive this car too. Hand controls should add a way to operate the vehicle, not remove one.
- The handle needs its full range of travel. If the brakes ever fade and the pedal goes long, the handle has to follow it all the way down. An installation that runs out of sweep at the wrong moment is a genuine hazard.
- The handle has to sit where an elbow can rest. Holding throttle by hand is a sustained effort in a way that resting a foot never is. Position it badly and every drive is tiring.
- Nothing can catch clothing. Control rods run through the same space as legs and trouser cuffs. A protruding edge or exposed fitting that hooks fabric is not acceptable.
- It has to be rigid without weakening anything factory. The assembly takes real load every time the car slows down. It needs to be solid, and it can’t get there by compromising structure the manufacturer engineered for a reason.
- It shouldn’t shout. There’s no reason adaptive equipment has to look like hardware bolted over the interior.
- It has to come back out. More on that below.
Where the fabrication came in
Meeting that list took considerably more work than the instructions suggest.
The biggest piece was the seat bracket. To keep the seat fully adjustable while still giving the throttle assembly something solid to mount to, we pulled the seats out entirely and modified the bracket, welding on a fixture to carry the control assembly. Mounting there rather than to the floor means the assembly travels with the seat — so the seat keeps every inch of its fore-and-aft adjustment.
The mounting plate itself is the part that has to be right. It picks up existing structure rather than new holes in the floor, spreads the load across several fasteners instead of concentrating it, and sits low enough to stay clear of the driver’s legs. Everything above it — the handle, the linkage, the loads that go through them every time the car stops — depends on this plate not moving.
From there the list of modifications ran long. The brake pedal was modified so the control rod could bolt directly to it — a positive mechanical connection, not a clamp relying on friction against a pedal that gets pushed hard. The brackets supplied with the kit were reworked for fitment, and extra bracing added where the kit’s own hardware wasn’t stiff enough to stop the assembly flexing under load. The brake control rod was reshaped to clear the dash through its full sweep.
The dash itself was modified, but deliberately and as little as possible. It would have been quicker to cut a large opening and let the rods swing freely through it. Instead it was altered only enough to allow full movement while keeping the result tidy. Everything was painted before final assembly and put together with thread locker.
The part that doesn’t photograph
Most of the hours went into fitment rather than fabrication. Test fitting, checking clearance through the full sweep of the handle, sitting in the seat and running it through its travel, hunting for anywhere a rod could contact something or a corner could catch fabric. None of that shows up in a photo or on a parts list, and it’s the majority of what makes the difference.
If you need this done
A few practical things worth knowing before you call:
- Bring the kit, or ask us first. Most customers arrive having already bought a system. That’s fine. If you haven’t bought yet, talk to us first — some kits suit some cars far better than others, and it’s cheaper to find that out before the box arrives.
- Expect it to take real time. This is fabrication, not a parts swap. The car will be with us longer than a service visit.
- We’ll work with your specialist. If you’re working with a driver rehabilitation specialist or occupational therapist who has specified a particular setup or handle position, send them our way — it’s much easier to build to their recommendation than to adjust afterward.
- Check your funding requirements. If the work is being paid for through the VA, vocational rehabilitation, or an insurance program, those programs often require the installer to hold NMEDA Quality Assurance Program accreditation. Ask us where we stand before you commit — we’d rather tell you up front than have you discover it at the reimbursement stage.
We’re a European service shop, and adaptive controls aren’t our core business. What we do have, which most service shops don’t, is a fabrication shop — our sister company builds and maintains race cars next door. Brackets that have to be stiff in the right places, linkages that have to move cleanly through their full travel, and controls that have to feel right to the person operating them are all things we deal with routinely. A hand control assembly is a driver interface, the same as a shifter or a pedal box. The standard should be identical, and the tolerance for getting it wrong is lower.
